Data resiliency takes over for data loss prevention

Gartner report says it’s time to redefine the methods used to protect data.

Don’t look too hard for the latest Gartner Magic Quadrant in the category of Data Loss Prevention (DLP). The analyst firm announced it is retiring the popular rating of top and emergent providers due to the sector having reached a mature stage of lifecycle development. In its place, Gartner will publish an annual DLP Market Guide.

The shift from Magic Quadrant to Market Guide illustrates the changing landscape in the area of data resilience. Organizations are now implementing tiered data protection strategies, which necessitate a complete toolchain of solutions to meet the different recovery objectives and requirements for uptime for the different types of data found in today’s organizations.

According to the Gartner report It's Time to Redefine Data Loss Prevention, many organizations have gone through the work of implementing enterprise data loss prevention without realizing the full value of a complete enterprise security platform, one that could track and control unstructured data movement across networks, endpoints and storage repositories. For these organizations, the report lists several recommendations, including:

  • Make the DLP management process a key element of your data security governance program.
  • Share the responsibility for securing data with data owners. Make a successful DLP program a shared responsibility between both IT and other constituents.
