How to back up Google Drive with Carbonite

Cloud storage vs. cloud backup: What's the difference?

Before you get started backing up your Google Drive with Carbonite, it's important to understand that cloud storage and cloud backup aren't the same thing. Many consumers — and even some businesses — use cloud storage solutions such as Google Drive because they’re free (depending on how much storage you need).

But users often learn the hard way that cloud storage does not offer the same protection from accidental deletions and costly disruptions as cloud backup solutions such as CarboniteTM.

Another important distinction is that storage solutions do not back up all of a user's files, or their desktop. It backs up only the files shared through the service.

1. Install Carbonite on your computer

2. Install the Google Drive app on your computer

3. Here's how to back up Google Drive with Carbonite

Before following the steps below, note that Carbonite will automatically back up Google Drive files that are synced on your computer. These files are backed up by default if you selected the Automatic setup option when you initially installed the Carbonite application.

Here's how to back up Google Drive with Carbonite manually:

  • Locate the Google Drive folder. If there's not a shortcut to the synced folder on your computer desktop, here are the default locations for Google Drive files:

          Windows PC:
          C:\Users\[User_Name]\Google Drive

          Mac:
          Macintosh HD/Users/[User Name]/Google Drive

  • Right-click on the Google Drive folder on your computer to display its options menu
  • Select the “Carbonite” option, then select "Back this up"
  • Carbonite will now see all of the Google Drive data and start backing it up.
